Why is it a good idea to overfly at an unfamiliar aerodrome before joining the circuit

To check the windsock for wind direction, speed and the active runway

To familiarise yourself with the runway

To give more time to give way to other aircraft and join the circuit

Why should you give your joining circuit call at least 10 seconds before you join

To make sure you radio is working

So you can then focus on the joining and not making the radio call

To give other aircraft that you may not have seen a chance to respond to your radio call before you join

To give you more time for your down wind checks
